DR. ROTH

Dr. Roth graduated from Michigan State University in 2005 with degrees in international relations and history. He earned a Master of Arts in Classics from the University of Georgia in 2010, during which time he was also involved in the Georgia Junior Classical League. Having advanced to the Doctor of Philosophy program in Classics at SUNY Buffalo, in 2014 he successfully defended his dissertation on the subject of Neo-Latin foreign language textbooks.

A native of the Detroit area, Dr. Roth worked as an intern in the Economics Section of the American Embassy in Athens and later served as a Peace Corps volunteer from 2005 to 2008, teaching English in the former Soviet Central Asian republic of Turkmenistan. Since returning to the U.S., he has taught all levels of Latin in high schools (Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School, Athens; Nichols School, Buffalo) and universities, including as an adjunct professor of liberal arts at D’Youville College in Buffalo. Specializing in Romance and Indo-European linguistics, Dr. Roth is particularly interested in oral Latin as a pedagogical tool and has participated in several spoken Latin workshops.

Dr. Roth is always looking to expand upon the languages that he has studied, which currently include Greek (ancient and modern), Hebrew (Biblical and modern), Sanskrit, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Russian, Czech, Turkmen, Turkish, Persian, Yiddish, Chinese, Old English, Classical Armenian, Old Church Slavic, and Akkadian.  In 2014, Dr. Roth received a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship to pursue Uzbek at Indiana University’s Summer Language Workshop.

Dr. Roth is the faculty advisor for the Quiz Bowl team, the Language Club, and the Quintilian Society.
