For the second consecutive year, a student at Atlanta Classical Academy has won the REACH scholarship. Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen (REACH) Program is a need-based youth development and scholarship program with specific financial, academic, and behavior eligibility requirements. Students from all over the state of Georgia are nominated for the scholarship, and only ten students from Atlanta Public Schools (APS) are selected. Last year, Andi Guerrero-Medina (9th grade) won this prestigious award, and this year, Daisy Johnson-Perez (8th grade) has won.
Daisy is a model student of intelligence and virtue here at ACA. Last year, she won the Perseverance Award as well as being on the Honor Roll every semester. Perhaps one of her greatest achievements has been how well she has learned English in such a short time. She came to the United States only a few years ago, and she has worked extremely hard to build English proficiency while working diligently in all core subjects. Her ESOL teacher, Mrs. Gallardo, says Daisy “is highly motivated, inquisitive, and she is always looking out for the well-being of others including those who others may overlook.” When asked about her best qualities, her History teacher, Mr. Nugent, says, “Daisy has an exuberant cheerfulness that she spreads to everyone. She is excited and curious in class and eager to learn every day.” All of these great traits played a huge role in her becoming a REACH scholar.
We hope to continue this great tradition of producing more REACH scholars in the years to come!
