The 2019-2020 school year is the first year Atlanta Classical Academy is participating in the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) School Nutrition Program through the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Nutrition Program. The Georgia Nutrition Program is the meal program APS follows for district schools, and it includes the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for free and reduced lunch for those who qualify based on demonstrated need. Previously, ACA has self-directed and self-funded our meal programs and our free and reduced lunch programs in cooperation with state guidelines and Chef Advantage, our meal service provider.
Participation in this program involves menu changes to comply with the program’s health and nutrition guidelines. Chef Advantage is a Georgia Nutrition Program-approved vendor, and we have worked with them throughout the summer to adjust our meal service menus and processes. One change you have likely noticed, especially for older students, is that there are no longer “double portions” available when ordering. Chef Advantage does adjust portion sizes based on grade levels as part of the program to accommodate varying nutritional needs by age. We recognize that student appetites don’t necessarily follow grade levels, so we have introduced a-la-carte options to supplement the standard meals. As a part of our program and to reduce single-use plastic waste, water will only be available at the water fountains; we encourage students to bring their own reusable water bottles.
APS recently announced that they have extended the CEP to all students in all district schools previously participating in the Georgia Nutrition Program to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students in district schools, regardless of demonstrated need. Atlanta Classical is in the process of exploring options to be part of the district-wide free meal provision for future years.
Participation in the Georgia School Nutrition Program will afford ACA access to a number of state- and federally-funded programs from technology to teacher training and beyond. We are grateful for your patience as we navigate this new program and adapt it appropriately for our school. Be on the lookout for more information, and a related application form which we are asking all families to complete.
